This book is my absolute bible for the assignment of "Perspective Exercise"..What does that mean? It simply means that an exercise or a group of exercises are prescribed to address functional weaknesses. Our bodies work as a whole, the hip does no propel us forward alone, it requires the knee and ankle to work with it...prescriptive exercises look for balance in all the associated structures and work towards improving functionality of the whole. This author has a great style of making complicated ideas simple to understand. He lays the book out into chapters covering hip, neck, back, arm and shoulder and gives you specific, simple exercise to decrease pain and increase function. You can literally go to the chapter of the body part that is hurting you and be guided in low impact simple exercises that really help. You might be tempted to read just the chapters that you "Need", but you will be well served by exploring the whole book. This Author and I agree on so many things that I simply have to have this book on my list of recommendations. As a therapist I believe that most pain is caused by underlying instabilities, tightness's or misalignments, but at the root of it all is Fascia. Fascia is a connective tissue web that surrounds everything in your body....muscle, tendon, bone, organs. Fascia is incredible strong and when tight or restricted can reek havoc with your whole body. This book gives you a framework for stretching that Fascia to create decompression in the spine and joints. It's brilliant! He breaks it down per body part, but you would be best served to read the whole book and try some of the very well described stretches. Sara Meeks is the Guru of Osteoporosis and she has made this simple to follow exercise book to lead you through a gentle stretching and strengthening program to help prevent or manage Osteoporosis and Back pain which often go hand in hand. The downside is that this book is out of print, you can still buy it but people have driven the price up to near $100. Although I think the information in the book is worth that price, I'd keep an eye on on Ebay or at your Library. In any case, if you can get ahold of a copy you've got real gold!
Movement is Medicine! I tell each and every one of my patients this. What I also tell them is that I don't care what movement based exercise program they choose, just choose one and do it! Almost half of my patients that walk through the door are coming in for treatment of shoulder pain.
